& THIS COULD BE THE LAST OF ALL THE RIDES WE TAKE SO DON'T LET GO ( you only live forever in the nights you make! ) Once upon a time, these things had been magnificent, though she guessed she should have thought; these things were still magnificent. These people didn't know what they were, they were burred in their soil for aeons and then dug back up again. They didn't have any labels, they were just the the weird things that they had found and had no idea what they were for. The theory postulated in the poster along with them was that they were for decorative purposes...but Valkyri knew better. Her hands trailed over the glass box that held them, one was a little trinket like thing which she identified almost straight off as a clock. A simple clock. Well okay not simple by everyone elses terms but by theirs...pretty babyish. She used to have one just like her, her father had bought her it for her when she was had started school...and she had adored it.
If anything she remembered being at on his lap as he taught her how to read it. How it worked. How it mattered. He had been determined that she was going to master it before everyone else...and she didn't. She was a slow learner by her species standards. The dumb kid that needed things explained twice. Back then she had wanted nothing more than to leave and never come back. After all...she never fit there did she? Sure...she might have been a bit stupid by their standards, she might have been the rebellious one but she had loved them with all her heart. Sure when she was fifty she had coloured her hair and cut it in the most mental style she could. They had gone mental of course, her mother screamed at her for everything under the suns...she had always been the challenging one.
Sure she could have done better, but couldn't everyone? A heavy sigh escaped her lips as she took a step back. There were so many things that reminded her of home, reminded her of the family and the community that she had lost. It was strange, it was stupid that you spent your entire life yearning for freedom and when you had it you wanted to go back home. There was no place like home when you had no where in the universe to go. Sure she knew it was back in one form or another but it wasn't home...rebuilding it wouldn't change the things that had happened. As The Doctor had said it wasn't the same and she could believe that full heartedly with her single heart.
Yet she wasn't one of them, she wasn't a Time Lord, she didn't live forever, she didn't change her face. Truth be told she was a little girl pretending to an adult in a universe that was too big for her. Being a hundred and fifty odd didn't seem so fun any more.

What had possessed her of all things to come here today? She hadn't been to a museum since she and the Doctor had been to the Louvre all those hundreds of years ago. She happened to admit that she liked it. All those pieces of art but it didn't help that a trip to Paris was spoiled because of some megalomaniac who ended up fractured in time. She let out a sigh at least this wasn't the Louvre but it felt oddly similar, except the exhibits seemed to be a hodge podge of alien items. Romana cocked her head a bit at something labeled as a musical instrument but it really was a hairdryer and an item that was labeled as a hairdryer was really a musical instrument."And I thought my archeology was bad." But Romana seemed interested in the instrument, she shook her head, what a waste to have a perfectly fine instrument behind plate glass, when everybody knew that musical instruments needed to be played.
Romana pulled out her sonic screwdriver and carefully deactivated the security system around the instrument and she took out the instrument. She knew she could never do it justice as the original owner and or player of the harp as the species of the harp had six hands and six arms but Romana carefully began to play a remorseful tune she remembered hearing from a musician of the same instrument. Romana frowned, a few notes were out of tune. She stopped playing the harp and began to tune the instrument. She muttered, "This is what happens when it isn't played."
Managing to get the instrument in-tune, Romana began to play the song over again. A few people who were visiting the museum came out of the wood works watching the Time Lady strum and play away on the instrument and Romana really did not not care if she got in trouble or not. The problem with museums was that they never considered the fact that some artifacts needed to be taken out and utilize or sadly the artifact they were trying to preserve would eventually fall apart. The harp started to get sticky and Romana quickly spat in her hand and rubbed her spit into the workings of the instrument lubricating the instrument as well. She got a foul look from one of the museum caretakers and Romana gave him an evil look, but continued to play away.

& THIS COULD BE THE LAST OF ALL THE RIDES WE TAKE SO DON'T LET GO ( you only live forever in the nights you make! ) Trailing hands along the cold glass she moved through the exhibit and tried to ignore the fact she felt almost sick as she looked at the items. So many memories of home, so many things that she had seen every day in her life. It was like talking a walk down memory lane while eating razors...why she had wound up here she probably would never know. Her TARDIS had a habit of never doing what the driver said. Though truth be told Rho was probably trying to get her to go home, she was determined to. As far as she was considered it was a trophy nothing more, some kind of monument erected to try and clasp on to the good old days and it wasn't going to work. At least that was what she wanted to think, because the truth was she didn't want it to.
She wanted them to know what it felt like to be freaking empty half the time, have nothing other than a hand me down ship and spend your life wondering what happened to your family and the race you were meant to be apart of. She knew damned well she wasn't the only one who escaped the Time War, there must have been others out there like, the kids sent away to come back one day as pure as gold but you would have thought they would have tried right? Tried to find the ones that went missing? No. It was nice to know they forgot about you. Sure they might not have known but she didn't care. She was so young and still so desperate for attention the idea that an entire race was unbeknown to your presence was just about how extreme it could get for a hundred and fifty year old Gallifreyan.
The music filtered to her ears though, she vaguely recognised it...that way you knew you had heard something before but couldn't pin point where or even how. It was soothing, one of those songs that made you want to sit down and just listen. Yet something else got her attention, she could almost smell it on the air, or rather feel it if that was a better description. There was a Time Lord in the room. Feck. Bumbgrapes! Taking a deep breath she bit her lip and looked around trying to work out who it was...so she could stay the hell away from them.
They always gave her that look when she met them, that sense of pity they always looked at her with when they realised that she only had one heart. Not old enough to be out of school never out roaming the world with enough technology to destroy it in a few short moments and a lack of common sense that would make even a worm cringe. Moving slowly through the room she listened, sat down on one of the long stone benches opposite the woman who was play and just listened. For some reason it reminded her of home, this whole place reminded her of home. It made her feel sick
Still she listened because if someone was dangling a thread of home and the good old days in front of her she was going to take it. Valkyri clapped, bit the inside of her cheek and smiled trying to make it look as if the glassy eyes weren't from past memoirs. “That was epic, where you learn to play like that?”

Romana finished playing the mournful tune and then quickly put the instrument back into it's case and locked it up., such a shame that the instrument was going to end up it's whole existence not being played. But at least she gave it a small amount of attention. A museum attendant glared at her, "Just who do you think you are?" Romana pulled out her psychic paper and showed it to them and the attendant stuttered and ran off. Romana sighed and looked at the psychic paper, "Apparently....one of your major contributors to this museum. "
Romana looked at the girl who managed to clap at her performance and Romana could tell, it was another.... Romana cocked her head curiously, not a Time Lord, but a Gallifreyian childe, well not exactly, just barely out of being a child. It was a surprize to see so many young ones. First Cypher and now this one. But then again, Romana hadn't been that old when she first started traveling with the Doctor., she after all had only been 139 when she had first started traveling, she had finished her studies and was granted her rank as a Time Lord. Knowing this girl and knowing herself at that age, Romana figured the girl was fiercely independent and wanted to be treated like an adult rather than a child and a sense of thinking you know everything.
Romana shrugged, "I've been around the universe once or twice. I took lessons from a six armed musician once He taught me how to play, course only having two arms and two hands. I was actually considered a really poor musician by him.” Romana sighed, “That was so long ago though and I wasn’t worried about a lot of things. The song….well that is another thing.” Her shoulders slumped, “I use to be able to access all the memories of all those back home, such was the burden of being President of Gallifrey. I found the song through my access of the Matrix, a lot of sadness was infused in the Matrix during the war."
Romana shook her head, "But the home I knew no longer exists."

& THIS COULD BE THE LAST OF ALL THE RIDES WE TAKE SO DON'T LET GO ( you only live forever in the nights you make! ) It felt her imagination was playing tricks on her as she listened, she could have sworn that the music was just thoughts dancing on the wind. Or maybe it was because she was too busy paying attention to the woman who was playing it? It didn't really matter, she almost felt familiar...she was older and the chances are she had met the woman before if only for a short moment. After all Vakyri had met so many people, her mother and father both on the High Council her brothers and herself had been paraded around like little trophies for people to see at parties. Valkyri remembered standing there with her 'good clothes' on and her face tripping her. People pretending that they gave a damned crap about anything she did while trying to get on her parents good side. It irked her badly and being made to play the game never went well with her.
It wasn't a human trait to be two faced an ambitious. It was a being alive thing shockingly enough. They might have been 'higher' up than most life in this universe but they shared the same ugly side and Valkyri had learned that at an early age. They painted this perfect and ideal world for everyone else in the universe and play god when there was just as much pen pushing, red tape bureaucracy as there was on every other planet. They just never wanted to admit that everything wasn't perfect. Sure she might have been a child then but she had been able to see what people were doing, after all...Valkyri might have sucked at maths compared to most of her age but she was a little bit too good with people. She always managed to talk her way out of things, it was easy if you knew how.
Listing to the woman talk she was actually rather interesting. It was like when she used to listen to her father tell stories of the universe that he had been to. “My father knows how to play it he is....pretty good...” Her voice trailed off and she went silent for a moment, that look on her face said it all. Vulnerable and lost...she couldn't bring herself to use past tense with him. She kept the universe warm for him even if he wasn't coming back. It was his TARDIS, his little world that he created inside that ship...nothing in this life was hers. Just a collection of their things that she had inherited and clung to trying to pretend that they were coming back for her.
Oh great she was a president. Fantastic. The leader of the free fucking world was sat right in front of her. Valkyri almost turned her nose up but managed to stop herself. And she was right, there was a lot of sadness through the war...the whole planet felt time convulsing around them...and it was never a settling feeling. She remembered the day her parents got told her brothers had died fighting in the war...well at least they had gone and were presumed dead. The way they cried, the way they tried to remain strong for everyone else and how all the signs had been there that something was badly wrong. “Yeah....everything was...well you know.” Valkyri didn't want to talk about the war...every time her mind went back to it she remembered the way her father had kissed her forehead on the last day she saw them. How he hadn't said anything other than 'I love you' no goodbyes. Maybe it was knowing they cared enough to hide her from the universe made it so much worse.
The young Gallifryan turned her head away, biting her bottom lip as she found herself struggling not to think about home. "But the home I knew no longer exists." Valkyri watched the wall for a moment, her eyes growing dark as she was deep in thought. “There is no place like home when there is nowhere else to go.” She stated her voice emotionless as she shook her head slightly. It was scary because it was almost true.

Romana listened and nodded at the young woman's words. She found it rare to state that she had been President of Gallifrey, she didn't like highlighting it more than she had to but it was true. Romana had found the song in the Matrix and the only person who had unlimited access to the Matrix would be the President. The girl seemed bugged about it and Romana couldn't fault her over it, it probably made her feel unconsciously aware of the fact that Romana had been in charge at least partially over the war as well as make her accutely aware that Romana was a proper Time Lady with titles and honors.
"I am just plain ole Time Lady now. No sense in being formal about things. A true President wouldn't have let what had happened to Gallifrey nor would they had let so many people die."
Romana had war guilt big time. The whole 'you must embrace life because you survived' was highly overrated. It didn't account for all the dead, it didn't account for the loss of home and family.
Romana sighed, "I lost my family too....." She said softly and said quietly, "Either to the war....or...." It suddenly dawned on Romana that even though she managed to escape excution via Rassilon, any of her family on planet and who supported her had more than likely had been executed or sent off on some horrible suicide mission where their was little likelihood of their return and they were all dead, "Or Rassilon had them killed."
Romana said softly, "My name is Romana......Romanadvoratrelundar. If....if their is anything I can do for you, anything...not that's its going to make up for anything....but considering that all of us are dispossesed. It's best that we....well we try and help each other as best as we can. If not.....I understand. It's not like I run into Gallifreyans everyday to offer help to."

& THIS COULD BE THE LAST OF ALL THE RIDES WE TAKE SO DON'T LET GO ( you only live forever in the nights you make! ) A true president would never have let them die? Well she couldn’t help but agree with that. Valkyri didn’t blame her though. She blamed them all. Everyone had been an enabler. No one had stopped to think of the chaos it might have brought to them and the rest of the universe. The lady in front of her wasn’t the only one with guilt and she wasn’t the only one thinking why did she make it out alive when so many other people hadn’t. Valkyri never had much sympathy when she said her family were gone, so were her’s, so were everyones they were all in the same boat. The one thing that got her though was she didn’t know how. She didn’t know if her parents had been lost when the planet burned or if they had been killed off by the manic bastard that was running the place. In all fairness Valkyri had more hate for him than anyone else in the universe and rightly so. He had destroyed their planet.
“Rassilon was a mad bastard who had no right to run the place…but ho hum.” That ws just how she views it. She couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened if someone else had been in charge. Maybe Gallifrey would still be on the map and maybe her family would be alive. She couldn’t have thought of any other leader that would have thrown away an entire race to make a point about his ego. Sure it wasn’t as simple as that but that was what it boiled down to in the end.
Of course she knew the name, she was around when the woman was in charge but too young to grasp a hold on much and too busy trying to cause trouble with friends. She should have been older, much older and everyone else had time to come to terms with what had happened….but waking up after being in stasis for hundreds of years to find your race gone was a shock. How the hell did you even start to deal with that? You didn’t. She brushed it under the rug and tried to pretend that it never happened but the truth was it came back to haunt her every time she thought she had left it behind. Every Time Lord she bumped in to opened fresh wounds and rubbed salt in them over and over again.
“I’m Valkyrirhoadhatheilongourine. But you know, everyone calls me Valkyri.” God only knew how her parents had explained her ‘disappearance’ to people the truth is probably told everyone that she ran away and that she was a deserter even though she had been no where near old enough to fight in a war. She hadn’t even finished school…but maybe they knew what was coming? Being offered help wasn’t something she was used to either and she couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t. I know what Time Lords think of us that weren’t lucky enough to be granted the privilege of ever lasting life. I don’t need your pity.”

"Rassilon is infamous....." Romana stated subjectively. She didn't say anymore since the girl probably had been in school at least long enough to know Gallifreyan history enough to know that Rassilon's previous history was like staring through a glass darkly. She said firmly, "Enough fools believed his propagandized history to bring him back."
Romana frowned, "I don't pity you. I don't even know you, so how can I pity someone I don't know? Pity comes from understanding someone fully, and frankly my dear you're an enigma. My offer was one seeking to unite the scattered remnants of our race together. But if you insist on meeting your fate alone, I won't stop you. Good luck if you run into the Daleks. As far as they are concerned they still are at war with us. And it doesn't really matter if you're a Time Lord or not. One Dalek shot means instant death. No regeneration. so....the playing field is pretty much equal in that regard."
Romana dug in her pocket and pulled out her bag of Jelly Babies and ate one, it really was a bad habit for her to interrupt conversation by digging into a bag of sweets but Romana needed the sugar to sort of keep her 'cool' so to speak. "Anyway, I have no time to speak to someone who rejects the company of her own kind, as far as I am concern we both have the same DNA in our background and I don't care whether you've got one heart or two. It makes little difference to me. I measure my associates by their worth, not by their hearts."

& THIS COULD BE THE LAST OF ALL THE RIDES WE TAKE SO DON'T LET GO ( you only live forever in the nights you make! ) She just confirmed her theory that their world had not been perfect....even though that was what they wanted you to think. Valkyri had just wanted to break away from the bullshit. Sure she might not have been the smartest, the truth was no one in her family had ever expected her to be granted a title when she grew up off her own back....if she did it would have been off her parents power and their position within their society. However she was good at one thin – people. All her skills laid with reading other people, she had been able to see through the lies, the shows of power, the way they tried to keep others in line and Valkyri was determined not to get caught up in all of that. It didn't matter any more though did it?
Of course she really hadn't meant to upset her, she could see that she had caused an offence and Valkyri didn't really want to be reunited with the rest of her race...did it sound horrific? None of these people remembered her, none of them knew her, none of them cared about her. Despite the near political scandals she had brought down on her parents with her antics as a child....well when she was a younger child. She sat there and looked at the woman as she spoke, a poker face that would have won her millions in another place and time. An enigma? She wasn't too sure what she meant by that, she thought she was pretty transparent, or at least she had told herself that so many times she started to believe it.
Romana easily shut her up, left her sat there feeling small, like she had been hauled in to the headmasters office and yelled at for doing something. It was the same feeling she used to get at the academy. When she would get snapped at and told off for not learning the same as everyone else. Anyone who knew her would have understood where the attitude came from....everyone tried to claim there was something different about them but the truth was with Valkyri it was true. The one that went wrong in the loom or got dropped on her head as a child.
It makes little difference to me. I measure my associates by their worth, not by their hearts.” Valkyri snorted, laughed a little before smirking. “You're a rare breed yourself.” She commented as her mind went back to the good old days. “Actually I think it was just me.” Maybe it was. “I went wrong in the loom – so they say.” There was a laugh, it was told as a joke but truth be told it was more serious a comment than you would have guessed. That was another thing Valkyri could do...she was a good liar.

The girl went quiet seeming either scared or intimidated and Romana felt bad, it wasn't her intention to put the fear of a Time Lord or Time Lady into the girl and maybe just maybe Romana felt lonely. There was only so much time and space one could do without feeling alone. She had K9, she had her TARDIS but for the first time in her lives she felt alone. But a Time Lord was rare to show emotion of any sort. It simply wasn't Time Lordian to admit emotion. Most Time Lords were so very restrained and proper but.... Gallifrey was gone. What did it matter? Gather Gallifrey? It use to be easy to find rogue Time Lords and Gallifreyans but since the loss of home finding the scattered remnants of Time Lords or even Non-Time Lords was impossible.....well maybe not impossible, just difficult. But looking at another of her race made Romana realize that she was lying and not even being honest, she just didn't want the girl to go off because.....well because Romana felt alone.
Romana went quiet too; she quietly munched away on Jelly Babies and offered some to Valkyri. "I was about your age when I started traveling through Time and Space. Frankly I never really wanted to leave Gallifrey to begin with, but I was under the impression that the Lord President of Gallifrey wanted me to leave and who would refuse a request from the The President of Gallifrey. So I left."
Romana paused a moment struggling on what to say, "I am not your traditional run of the mill Time Lord. Leaving home and traveling with an eccentric traveling companion sort of changes your view on the universe. But.....I am not the Time Lady that paraded on Gallifreyan news circuits with cardinals and castalans. Yea, that had a purpose. But I was trying to push a few reforms into all that Time Lordian pomp and circumstance. Not that I suppose that makes a good lot of difference now."
Romana sighed, "But my acquaintances haven't all been Time Lords let alone Gallifreyan. Course I got a lot of flack from the rank and file over who I kept company with. The CIA.....even tried to overthrow my presidency because they thought I was Un-Time Lordian to be friends with humans and other aliens out their."

& THIS COULD BE THE LAST OF ALL THE RIDES WE TAKE SO DON'T LET GO ( you only live forever in the nights you make! ) Glancing at the woman she could understand where she was coming from. Valkryi just never wanted to admit it. She wanted to pretend that all Time Lords were scum of the universe so she had an excuse to stay away from them. Sitting in the presence of another one who was calm was quote…calming in itself. You could feel them in the room and the whole atmosphere changed around them. Sure she had been around The Doctor briefly but he was pure chaos and it was unsettling even if he was a vaguely nice person. Being around other Time Lords didn’t feel weird to her, the truth was she hadn’t been awake that long, to her the war was fresh in her mind, it wans’t hundreds of years ago it was months and weeks ago.
Valkyri looked down at her shoes as the Ex Ruler spoke of their world, she found the somewhat…truthful talking was refreshing. She didn’t like the fact that people were trying to remember the place through rose tinted glasses. Some of the planet died without ever having seen the rest of the universe, without seeing the world on their back door step. Entire sects of society locked away….it wasn’t a fair society and it wasn’t somewhere where most people would want to live. Sure Valkyri understood how damned lucky she was to be loomed in to the part of society that she had been….she was so lucky and so privileged and maybe that was what made her so angry about the whole damned thing. Why should she have got that preferential treatment and no one else had.
But I was trying to push a few reforms into all that Time Lordian pomp and circumstance. Not that I suppose that makes a good lot of difference now. The young Gallifreyan shrugged her shoulders and sighed a little. “At least you tried.” She stated factually. “So many Time Lords and their houses wouldn’t…they live in their own world, we lived in this privileged high class society, we have everything we need and could ever want why would anyone else ever have mattered.” There was something sad about her voice, truth was she might have been too young to know those sort of truths, back home she was nothing more than an insolent child. She was insolent because she knew the truth. “Everyone sits wishing for the good old days, when Gallifrey was a shining point of the universe, this race that was meant to be perfect and looked up at. We only got there because they locked away and abandoned everything that didn’t fit that plan.” Sure it might have been like that but she knew not many people would approve of the way she spoke about it, after all blunt honest opinion was never something that had been popular on her world.
She cracked a smile though, okay she was starting to like this woman, well ever so slightly. The CIA.....even tried to overthrow my presidency because they thought I was Un-Time Lordian She snorted, laughed before she shook her head and looked at her, this bright grin on her face. “Better than being part of a machine. Nothing worse in the universe than watching evil and doing nothing to stop it.” With the way she talked, Valkyri most certainly would either have been outcast when she was of age or shoved off a cliff, though with her family it would more than likely of been the former. It was the ‘kind’ thing afterall.

Romana gave a long sigh, "But we were both born in it and we had to live with what was. No society is perfect." Romana sighed, "Some of our race might be called "Lords" but that doesn't automatically make us gods. Even Time Lords make mistakes. Our pride and ego have always been our downfall." Romana lowered her head, "Including my own. I use to have such a high minded opinion of myself. But I was young, arrogant and cocky. Plus I hadn't regenerated yet. So my whole concept of invincibility was pretty high. I suppose for some Time Lords that still was an issue, because most of them don't mortally die, they end up regenerating in a controlled environment after perhaps a few thousand years or so. And even though I've only gone through the change only once, I've also stared at death more times then I'd care to count."
Romana then said calmly, "I lied....I never planned on gathering any Time Lords or Gallifreyans. There's no place to gather them to. Well maybe the Eye of Orion but...there is no way to summon our race anymore. It died when Gallifrey died. But I am lonely and I ache for company and I can count on my fingers seeing our race."
Romana said softly, "I have no anger towards our race. Sometimes their is nothing that can be done when you see your race slowly rotting away from the inside out. Instead of anger all you have is a sense of sorrow and regret that their wasn't something more that you could do to keep things happening the way they did."
Romana shook her head, "It's a bit like being a character in a tragic play, knowing that it's not going to end well but you play it out regardless because it's your part. But...."
Romana smiled softly, "Enough moping, moping makes me feel older than I am and I am not that old. This museum makes me feel like a museum piece as well. So many things from home. Although....."
Romana then said quietly, "Isn't it odd that their are so many old things from our home here. It seems that someone has a fascination with all things Gallifrey. I don't have a good feeling about this. It's not normal, it's as if....well it's like someone knew we were coming and set all these things out."

& THIS COULD BE THE LAST OF ALL THE RIDES WE TAKE SO DON'T LET GO ( you only live forever in the nights you make! )
No society was perfect but theirs...well she saw plenty of other ways they could have gone about it . Never the less it had worked almost, law and order were maintained and their was peace on the planet, wasn't that the goal of any ruling power? She tuned out most of what Romana was saying, more because truth be told her head was back home...picturing the vast landscapes of the city that she had grown up in and the people that there were. The way her father used to sit in his study and call her in to ask why the hell she had flunked another exam....and the way he said he didn't care about the mark just that she had tried. Though the truth was she had never tried.
[i[never planned on gathering any Time Lords or Gallifreyans. There's no place to gather them to. Well maybe the Eye of Orion but...there is no way to summon our race anymore.
[/i] Maybe that was for the best though? Look at what they had done, they had destroyed an entire planet in a war, she still felt the aftermath of it, the universe still convulsed in the back ground every so often and time warped around it. It was like the beat of the city changing, putting road works in the center and shutting off the roads. The whole city shifted to compensate, the beat of it changed, the patterns of traffic and the sound of it along with it. She was right though, no more moping, no more sitting around being sad and wishing the universe was different it wasn't going to do much good at all was it? Valkyri even cracked a smile, looked around and nodded her head. “I find it more...strange that they've ended up here, home was over 300 million light years away, I doubt many people have come this far out.” That was the entire reason they were here, because it was as far away from home as freaking possible! She took a few steps, looking around before laughing to herself, “oh they've got this one wrong as well,” everything in here was labelled wrong and it was hilarious. “They think a bottle opener is a medical device..” Oh god, the very idea of that made her want to throw up.
